Samsoe Island
Hans came from Samsoe Island.
I visited Samsoe in 1987 and in May 2008.
Hans as a young boy in Samsoe.
Hans' grandfather was born in this house.  Morten Larsen Jorgensen was born 24 April 1764.  Hans' sister, Bodil Marie & her husband, Just Pedersen also lived in this house.  I have a copy of a letter that Bodil Marie wrote to Hans.  I do not believe she has any living descendants.
Hans lived in this house in Brundby on Samsoe Island.
This is the Stubmolle windmill.  It was built in the 1600's.  It used to be on the Island of Endelave and in 1693 the windmill was moved to Brundby.
These are new windmills on Samsoe Island.  Samsoe has been in the news a lot in recent years because they are entirely energy self-sufficient because of their windmills.
Harvey & Gudrun Andersen.  Gudrun was a descendant of Hans' older brother, Morten Jorgen Mortensen.  She was the only relative, on Hans' side, that I had any contact with.  I was supposed to meet her, but unfortunately she died the very day that I arrived in Denmark.
Gudrun has a son, Ivan Andersen,  who lives on a farm and has a mini-museum.  He makes stone age tools using the same techniques that they used 10,000 years ago.
Gudrun sent me this picture of her grandparents and their children.  Gudrun's grandfather was Peder Soren Mortensen.  He was the son of Morten Jorgen Mortensen who was Hans' older brother.

This is Karl Erik Kornmaaler Mikkelsen.  He took me to Samsoe Island and drove me all over the island.  He is the one that located the houses where Hans and his family lived.
I took this picture on Samsoe looking out into the water.
Karl Erik and I had a picnic lunch on Samsoe.  He parked his van in a spot where we could see 4 churches in each of the 4 different directions.  You can just see a little bit of one of the churches in this picture.
This is Besser Church where Hans' mother, Dorthe Marie Hansdatter, was christened.

Tranebjerg Church where the Mortensen Family attended church services.
Samsoe is a very interesting shape.
Hans' family came from Brundby.  His mother was from Besser.  Besser is not shown on this map, but is north of Tranebjerg.
